Advice on Online Thrifting
The service at my school gets progressively worse with time. In my freshman year I needed to be connected to the school’s crappy public wifi to be able to conduct a simple Google search and to send a call or text. Some areas of the building had better service and I could access Youtube. For some reason on Mondays the service was always good enough so that I could access the internet like I normally would from any other location. The first half of sophomore year was pretty much the same, except the service got a little worse and the school started blocking things more. They blocked Cool Math Games and more YouTube videos that we were previously able to access on the Chromebook. They also started blocking websites on the public wifi. During the second half of sophomore year we stopped getting service on Mondays. At the end of sophomore year the school found a way to block the vpn most students were using. Junior year is really bad. The school went ham on blocking stuff. They blocked the snake game, minesweepers, etc. The blocking videos on YouTube thing has even started to annoy the teachers, because it is very common for videos they assign to get blocked. The school blocked a bunch more things on their public wifi as well. My friends and I have recently gotten into Charecter.AI. (When you are bored and living in the suburbs where there is nothing to do, it’s a decent pass time) As you can guess the school blocked that on their public wifi. The service at the school got phenomenally worse. It is rare for me to be able to send a text and have it go through. If I want to call someone I have to use the phone in the office. You are probably bored of reading my rant so I will get to the point. Depop and Poshmark are one of the few websites my school has yet to block. And I am usually able to get on these websites with the minimal service I get from the school’s public wifi. So when I have finished an assignment and I’m bored with nothing to do, or while I spend 25 minutes waiting for my bus everyday, I like to browse online thrift stores. If you are like me, an average girl living in the suburbs where there is literally nothing to do, you have probably been disappointed walking into the thrift store. I remember seeing all these girls online bragging about how they found this beautiful slip dress, or this dainty corset top, in the Goodwill bins. I saw a lot of people saying that you could find stuff like this in the lingerie section. So I went to the Savers in the next town over(my town doesn’t even have a thrift store), and it was the usual disappointment. At first I had trouble finding the lingerie section. Once I did I realized that it was barely a foot long! 😭 There were only a few items in there and most of them were regular pajamas, or a sheer black bra that my Grandma would wear. And because this is near the suburbs, the rest of the clothes are things donated by Church moms, and three rows of jeans from your dad. Usually when I buy something at the thrift store it is a decoration for my room. When I go to Savers I usually find a much better selection at the boutique next store. It’s basically if Shein was a local boutique, low quality stuff for cheap. Since there are probably a lot of girls in a similar situation as me, I want to give my girlies some advice on how to find cute things when thrifting online.
Use an online thrift site that is known for having a good selection. I mainly use Poshmark, Depop, and Mercai. I have spent a decent amount of time on Threadup and have never really seen anything cute or interesting. I don’t spend that much time on Vinted, but I haven’t seen anything interesting or unique there either. This is just my experience, but I would recommend spending time on all of these sites to figure out which ones have the best selection that accommodates your style.
Rather than searching the name of a style, I would recommend finding a brand that produces clothes in that style and searching its name. So instead of searching just searching “Gyaru” I will also search “Ma*rs”. Instead of searching “girly clothes” I search “Liz Lisa”.
Once you find a post of an item that you like, check the profile of the person selling that item. Oftentimes, the person selling the item that you like has a closet full of clothes in that same style.
Follow accounts that sell a lot of clothes in the style you like. Depop and Poshmark will start showing you more listings in that style. This is why you need to frequently check the “recommended for you” tab.
Check Pinterest and Instagram! There are a lot of resellers advertising their stuff on there! This would also be a great time to plug my Pinterest, @DiaryofNatalieRose! I post a lot of my good online thrift finds on my Outfit Inspo board to make online thrifting easier for people with my style!
Do not be afraid to ask people to put the price down. Online thrifting is expensive when you aren’t buying an item that is currently being mass produced for your local mall. I find that people who have had a listing up for a long time are much more willing to go down on the price. You have nothing to lose if they say the price is firm. (Unless they block you😭)
Try putting the word “rare” or “vintage” before your search, especially if you are searching for a fast fashion brand that mass produces clothes. I know it’s weird, but I find that people tend to put those words on garments that are more unique. I found cuter items when I searched for “vintage Victoria’s Secret”.
