Advice On Creating A Wardrobe
As you may have seen in my recent blog posts, I've been thinking a lot about creating seasonal outfits. I realized that I wanted to add more seasonal items to my wardrobe. Wearing an outfit that matches the current season makes me feel like the main character. It makes me happier and I end up being more productive. When I wear my fall outfits, I picture myself as a college student sitting in a cozy autumn-themed cafe, enjoying a pumpkin muffin and listening to lo-fi music while getting my schoolwork done. It helps me to get in the school mood and get my work done. I've become especially fond of spring outfits and have been working on selecting items for my seasonal wardrobe. Here's some advice based on what I've been doing:
Create a Wardrobe Checklist:
The first thing I did was create a wardrobe checklist using a Google Doc, with a header for each season I wanted to shop for. Whenever I found an item I liked, I would create a bullet point with a short description of the item and a link to it. If I found an item that would look great paired with another item on my list, I would put it under another bullet point. Creating a Google Doc is a great idea because it allows you to go back to it and save time when looking for clothes. In one hour, I was able to find plenty of items to start saving for, so I won't have to scroll through a shopping website for quite a while.
Use Photo Editing Apps to Create Outfit Edits:
My friends have started doing this recently when they are bored. Creating outfit edits is a fun way to test how clothes look together before buying them. You can use a photo editing app, I use IbisPaint X, to remove the background of photos of clothes you like and pair them together to see the items you picked out look good together.
Search for Specific Accents and Colors:
When searching for seasonal clothes, if you search "spring top" or "green spring top,” you will notice that you get a lot of generic garbage that isn’t cute and could be worn any season that the weather permits. I would recommend searching for specific accents that you want to see. For example, search for "ruffle hem light green spring top”. This will help you find clothes that match the seasonal aesthetic you're looking for. This advice is not just for seasonal shopping, it can be applied to whatever style of clothing you are shopping for!
Try Depop and Poshmark:
Almost everything on my seasonal wardrobe checklist is from Depop, with a few items from Poshmark. I like to use Depop to search for clothes because I noticed that it always recommends unique items in the style that I like. I also noticed that many sellers have a specific style of clothing in their store, so if you find an item you like, there's a good chance the seller has other items you'll love.
Talk to People with a Similar Style:
If you have a friend who is fond of a particular style that you want to shop for, ask them for advice. You can gain a lot of useful information about styling and buying clothes from people who already know what to do, and where to look. Sharing tips and advice with each other can also be a fun way to bond over your shared interest.
