Back to School Outfit Ideas From a High School Senior

This summer flew by disappointingly fast. It’s hard to believe school is going to start again in under three weeks. I will be a senior this year, which is pretty nerve wracking. However, one thing that isn’t nerve wracking for me is outfits. Fashion is my passion, so I’m confident in my ability to put together a cute outfit.

I should preface this post by saying that fashion doesn’t matter to most high schoolers. If you have a unique and nice outfit you will probably get a compliment, but for the most part students don’t put any effort into their outfits. I’ve never had the need to worry about people making fun of me, and if you hang around the right people you shouldn’t either. The basic formula for what the majority of kids these days are wearing is simple.

Formula 1 (any gender):

  • A hoodie from a major sports brand, PacSun, or Holister

  • Jeans, black leggings, or sweatpants

  • Nike Sneakers

Formula 2 (girls)

  • Jean pants or shorts

  • A solid color tank top or crop top from PacSun, Holister, or Cider

  • Sometimes a knit cardigan

  • Nike Sneakers or Converse

Formula 3 (any gender)

  • Pajamas

  • Slippers or crocs

I’m not fond of this formula, however, I do understand the desire to have days where you want a low effort and comfortable outfit. Throughout my high school years I have created my own outfit formula for these types of days. My formula for simple, easy, comfortable, and feminine outfits is a solid color knit sweater, and a skirt that is either plaid or is also one solid color. I like this formula for a variety of reasons. First of all, solid knit sweaters are extremely versatile and comfortable, making them easy to wear. The skirt (which I often pair with fleece lined tights in the winter) adds femininity to the outfit. A solid knit sweater and a simple skirt are very easy to come by, making this type of outfit easily attainable. These outfits also don’t stand out too much, which makes them great for those who don’t want too much attention.

For those who are just starting their fashion game or have days where they want to take things slow, I think this outfit formula will be perfect for you. Below I will provide pictures of outfits I made following this formula for you to use as inspiration.

Both the knit sweater and the skirt are effortlessly accessible, ensuring this type of outfit is attainable for anyone. Additionally, these outfits strike a balance between standing out and blending in, which is perfect for those who prefer a more subtle look.
